in summary, alien is set in deep space with a "crew of the commercial star ship nostronomo is awakened from their cryo-sleep capsules halfway through their journey home to investigate a distress call from an alien vessel." it is a non linear film meaning it has flashbacks but is a single strand film so it has one story from start to finish. this is what i understand from what is above.
